Local Athlete Qualifies as Basketball Referee

Waterford Athlete George Fitzgerald qualified earlier in the year as a Trainee Basketball Referee through the National Referees Association (NRA) and Basketball Ireland (BI)

George is the first Irish Special Olympics Athlete to qualify as a Basketball referee.

Since qualifying George has been refereeing underage Kilkenny League games in the South East Area on a regular basis. Earlier in the Year George also officiated at a Special Olympics Exhibition Basketball game at the Senior National Cup Finals held in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

George plays Basketball with the Waterford Sharks and is the teams Captain. A multi-talented athlete, he has represented Munster and Ireland at various sports over the years.

Pictured below is George with Mary Phelan, FIBA Referee and the Basketball Referee co-ordinator for the Ireland Games. George will be representing Munster at Basketball at the 2018 Special Olympics Ireland Games to be held in Dublin from 14th – 17th June.
